What is happening when the brain learns? It is generally assumed that synaptic plasticity underlies the learning process, but in higher organisms there is a major gap between the description level of synaptic plasticity and that of animal behavior.

In this advanced seminar we will examine classic and recent papers from a wide variety of fields including electrophysiology, behavior and theoretical modeling. Main themes will be the discovery of the myriad forms of plasticity in the mammalian brain, phenomenological modeling of synaptic plasticity mechanisms, and the attempt to bridge the gap in description levels.
