The Tuesday Lab Seminar Rules

The Tuesday Rules

Tuesday seminar talks are intended as a forum for regular updates on what each of us is working on, i.e. progress reports, for concept presentations, e.g. soon-to-be submitted manuscripts/posters, and final presentations of PhD and Diploma theses. Naturally, progress report reflect the current state of your work, so it doesn't really matter whether you have finished any particular part of the project or are in the middle of it. These talks are a great chance to receive input from the group and to keep each other involved. Since this is our most regular meeting and also a forum for organizational information and discussions, it is meant to have the full attendance of our group, in other words: everybody is requested to attend.

Please consider that our lab talks are not meant to be "perfect" presentations! The important aspect is discussion of our ongoing work. It may also be helpful to consider that the speaker typically benefits at least as much from the presentation as the audience.

All scientific members of the group will present in more or less regular turns on Tuesdays every other week. The sequence reflects the time passed since his/her last talk. The introductory project presentations of new diploma and PhD students, and the respective final presentations, as well as practice-presentations before 'big' talk and conferences will be squeezed in as well.
A second series of presentations is reserved for manuscript presentations. These are sessions in which 'ready-to-submit' manuscripts will be discussed.

• Let us know if you have a manuscript that is close to submission, the sooner the better, so we can schedule a presentation for you.
The remaining Tuesdays will be filled by guest speakers, lab course reports, etc.. These gaps may also be used to shift your talk plus/minus 1 week AFTER arranging with the chairman.
• If you have a lab guest or know of someone from outside the lab who may give a lab talk, let us know when it would be possible for them to give a talk. Even if the respective date is already filled, we can try to reschedule. It is preferable to have such a talk on a Tuesday morning, when everyone expects a presentation anyway, rather than on a special date. The same applies if you have an upcoming talk outside the lab and want to give a practice talk, or if you have anything to report that may be interesting for the people in the lab, etc.
• Grosspraktikum and thesis supervisors: Please let us know when a Grosspraktikum starts, so we can find a (preliminary) date for the student's report. Likewise, thesis final reports should be scheduled in advance.

Assignments
• If your name appears with the remark "prelim", the date of your presentation may still be subject to change without notice. Check your assigned date frequently! Better yet, contact the organizers as soon as possible to confirm the date or reschedule. Presentation dates will be fixed automatically several weeks in advance. Note that the chairman cannot keep track of everybodys vacation/conference trips, so again, make sure to tell him/her early on.

Once your date is fixed, it is your responsibility to find a substitute if you can't make it.
Likewise, should it be necessary that a particular person be present for the talk, e.g. your advisor or Ad, make sure that you confirm/arrange this well in advance, best as soon as you find your name in the list. Then immediately fix this or a new date with the current chairman. It is NOT sensible to try shifting in the last week before the talk because it will be close to impossible to find another speaker then!

If you absolutely need to cancel your presentation on short notice without having a substitute (which, of course, should not happen), send an email with Cc: to all_aertsen, so that everyone will be informed.

As we agreed at the Huettenseminar, an abstract of each talk will be hyperlinked to the title. Please send me these abstracts as early as possible, at least 1 week in advance as plain text or MS-Word file NOT in Latex!

The schedule may be updated frequently, even shortly before the seminar, so check regularly with reload.
Unless announced otherwise the lab seminar will take place every Tuesday starting at 9:15h sharp - ending at 10:30h.
As a rule the first 15 min will be reserved for organizational issues if needed. Presentations will start any time after we're done with these. Presenters should plan for a 45 min presentation. The remaining time is reserved for discussion, which is encouraged an generally takes place during the talk. All presentations should be given in English. A beamer will be available. If you do not bring a laptop please arrange in advance that one is provided with the correct operating system. Make sure your files run on as many OS versions as possible.
